The Sideboard Transformation- GREEN!

August 21, 2012

I got busy this week and transformed this old sideboard into that green masterpiece I talked about last week! I don't know if I would call it a masterpiece, but it sure does look a lot better than it did before. I could see it brightening up an entrance with the right accessories, or in my case, working wonderfully as some extra storage in my classroom this year!

I'm teaching in a portable this year that has no cupboard storage, just some open shelving, which is really annoying when you are anally tidy like me and need everything to look nice and neat. This little number will really do the trick for the extra boxes of kleenex and bulk school supplies to be hidden away in. I haven't brought it into the school yet, but when I do, I'll let you know how it looks!

Here's the before and after! BIG change!

I started by taking off the cupboard doors and all the hardware and sanding the whole thing with a fine grain sandpaper. I just wanted to do enough to rough up the surfaces and make the original wood stain porous. After that I wiped it all down with a damp cloth.
Mr. Tweedle helped me with the first coat. Usually it would be wise to take the drawers out of this before painting, but we just couldn't take these ones out! It was a little trickier leaving them in, but it worked out ok.

This is what it looked like after the first coat. Not much coverage!
I ended up having to do 4 coats to get it perfect!

Here it is drying after the 4th coat.

Voila!

Tweedle Tip: Painting furniture is a really quick, easy and inexpensive way to spruce up something old and dreary. Play around with paint samples and experiment with draping different fabrics over something to try and visualize what it will look like in the end. You'll be amazed at how much a little elbow grease and paint can do for something!

  1. The finished product is fantastic, I love the color you chose! I need something for storage in our dining room, but I'm intimidated by the idea of thrifting and repainting something that large myself. You may have inspired me to try though!
